Gum Treatment
Bleeding gums are not normal. They are often the first sign of gum disease, caused by plaque and tartar along the gum line. Untreated, it can progress to bone loss, bad breath, loose teeth and tooth loss. Early treatment is simple.

Who it is for
People with bleeding, swollen or receding gums, bad breath, or teeth that feel loose or are moving. This matters especially for people with diabetes, smokers and tobacco chewers, and pregnant women.
The diabetes link
Diabetes and gum disease affect each other. A joint report by the European Federation of Periodontology and the International Diabetes Federation found that people with diabetes are more prone to gum disease. It also found that treating gum disease can modestly lower blood sugar (HbA1c). If you have diabetes, tell us your latest HbA1c.
What happens and how many visits
- Examination, gum measurements and X-rays.
- Scaling, plus deep cleaning under the gum (root planing) where needed. Usually 1–4 visits.
- Instruction in brushing and cleaning between teeth.
- Review after about 1 week. Advanced cases may be referred to a periodontist.
Aftercare
Gums may feel sore and teeth sensitive for a few days. Bleeding should reduce as the gums heal. Keep up daily cleaning, stop tobacco, and come for regular maintenance visits.
