Plaque that is not removed hardens into tartar (calculus), which a toothbrush cannot remove. Scaling removes tartar and stains with ultrasonic and hand instruments, so the gums can heal.
Who it is for
Everyone, usually every 6–12 months. More often if you have gum disease or diabetes, or if you smoke or chew tobacco.
What happens and how many visits
One visit of about 25 minutes; heavy tartar may need two. Then polishing and brushing advice.
Aftercare
Some sensitivity and gum soreness for a few days is normal. Gaps may seem bigger where tartar was filling them. Keep brushing twice daily and cleaning between teeth.

No. If a tooth feels loose afterwards, gum disease had already loosened it, and the tartar was holding it like a splint. The cleaning lets the gums heal and tighten.
