Root Canal Treatment

When decay or a crack reaches the nerve inside a tooth, the nerve becomes inflamed or infected. Medicines may reduce pain for a while but cannot remove the cause, so the pain usually returns. Root canal treatment cleans the inside of the tooth, seals it, and saves the tooth.

Who it is for

People with lingering pain to hot or cold, night pain, pain on biting, swelling or a pimple on the gum near a tooth, or a deep cavity seen on X-ray.

What happens and how many visits

  1. Examination and X-ray. We show you the X-ray and explain whether the tooth can be saved.
  2. Local anaesthesia numbs the tooth.
  3. The inside is cleaned and shaped with rotary instruments, washed, and sealed.
  4. Many teeth are completed in one sitting where clinically suitable. Teeth with heavy infection, swelling or curved canals may need two or more visits, with medicine placed inside between visits. A 2016 Cochrane review (Manfredi and colleagues) looked at 25 trials with 3,780 people. It found no difference between single-visit and multiple-visit root canal treatment in success or complications, so we choose based on your tooth.
  5. A crown is advised afterwards, especially for back teeth (see below).

Aftercare

  • Mild soreness on biting for a few days is common.
  • Avoid chewing hard food on that side until the crown is fixed.
  • Get the crown done within the time advised. A 2002 University of Iowa study (Aquilino and Caplan) found that root-canal-treated teeth without a crown were lost about 6 times as often as crowned teeth.

Fee

Root canal treatment: front tooth ₹3,500, back tooth ₹4,500 to ₹7,500. The crown is extra (see Our Fees). Written estimate before treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Antibiotics do not cure the inflamed nerve inside a tooth. A 2019 Cochrane review found only one small trial of 40 people, and not enough evidence that antibiotics reduce this kind of toothache. They are used only for spreading infection, alongside treatment.

The tooth is numbed, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Some soreness afterwards is normal for a few days.

A treated back tooth is weaker and can crack. A crown protects it.
